Mascara adds the perfect finishing touch to any look. By lengthening and thickening the lashes, the eyes will appear bigger and more open, freshening your face with very little effort.
The problem with this seemingly simple product is that many of the formulas irritate sensitive eyes, so the pickings are slim when it comes to finding one that actually works and won’t cause red, watery eyes.
Since a few of us are sensitive to cosmetic products and we have had our share of duds when it comes to mascara, we would like to share a list of the best mascara for sensitive eyes that we have tried thus far.

Identify the Irritants
Do you know which ingredients irritate your eyes? Most people do not, but once you start becoming more familiar with the formula contents, it is much easier to avoid the problem-causing products.
Most often, these ingredients in mascara formulas irritate the eyes:
- Propylene glycol
- Aluminum powder
- Diazolidinyl urea
- Artificial fragrance
Have you considered a gluten intolerance? If you aren’t sure or have never been tested, then it might be a good idea to find out. There are gluten-free formulas out there, and it may do the trick.
Many drugstore brands use the ingredients above, which is why you probably haven’t had any luck with mascara from Maybelline, Cover Girl, L’Oréal, and so on.
If that is the case, then what do you want to see on the label?
Look for these terms to achieve lash success:
Don’t expect all of the eye-friendly mascaras to contain every single one of these words on the label, but use them to help you eliminate the junk and focus more on the good stuff.
What to Expect from Eye-Friendly Mascara
We hate to admit it, but some of the junky ingredients in the drugstore brands do help the products perform better.
Many of the natural formulas that don’t use those ingredients have more problems with flaking, smudging or rubbing off throughout the day, so these issues go hand and hand with healthy eyes and skin.
Another thing you can expect is to pay more. These formulas are higher in quality, and their price reflects that, but they are worth the splurge if you can’t use drugstore products.
We will be highlighting only the best mascara for sensitive eyes in our “Review” section to help make your final decision easier, but the other brands lower on the list are still worth trying if none of them work.
5 Best Mascara for Sensitive Eyes Reviews
Endlessly Beautiful is one of the most popular products for those with sensitive eyes since it has proven to be so effective for a vast number of users. We were equally impressed with the results and would like to share more about it in detail.
Their ingredient list is rather interesting, with a bit of chamomile, Vitamin E, sunflower seed oil and even coffee powder! All of the ingredients are natural, and of those, 85% of them are organic, which means the odds are in your favor that it won’t cause any irritation. It is also gluten-free and a vegan-friendly product.
Applying it is a breeze, and it is quite smooth when you swipe it on your lashes. You will need two or three coats of it if you want to achieve decent volume, but it doesn’t clump. Smudging seems to be an occasional issue for some, but most find that it doesn’t smudge.
We noticed that many complain about the “small” bottle, however Endlessly Beautiful points out that the amount of mascara it contains is just as much as other brands provide in larger tubes. It is more or less the same amount of product but with less packaging.
Will this work for you? Hopefully, it does, because there are never any guarantees that it won’t cause a reaction, but based on our positive experience and that of others, it is one of our top picks.
Next, we have EVXO’s mascara, a product that comes from a well-known vegan-friendly company that just happens to have an equally awesome foundation. More on that another day.
The formula, which contains both natural and organic ingredients, is free of the most common irritants that bother sensitive eyes. You will not find any artificial colors or fragrances, and there are no harmful preservatives.
We really love the product and the formula, but the spoolie was a bit chunky and caused the product to go on equally as chunky. Make sure you wipe off excess product on the tube opening before swiping across your lashes. It seems to stay on better than the Endlessly Beautiful mascara, although this one does seem to irritate some users’ eyes.
We wish that it came in more than one color; however, we won’t complain too much because black is one of the most popular mascara colors out there. Perhaps they will add a brown or some fun colors in the future! We’d use them, for sure.
If you want a slightly more affordable mascara that is natural and gentle, then try Easy on the Eyes from Beautify Beauties. They offer their product in three colors, including black, black/brown, and navy. The formula is hypoallergenic and free of fragrance, so if artificial scents are your enemy, you might have luck with this one.
For the most part, it stays put after you apply it. Since it is not a waterproof formula, you can’t expect wonders, but it is gentle and noticeably lengthens lashes. It does seem to dry out more quickly than some of the other products out there, which is rather disappointing since it seems to work so well!
It is worth a try if you haven’t yet found anything that won’t irritate your peepers and you need different color options.
Mia Adora’s mascara is a good choice if you have little to no eyelashes and need something that will help add length.
The formula is hypoallergenic, although it isn’t quite as pure as the products we have talked about thus far. In the formula, you will find green tea, which helps stimulate lash growth and clean the lashes, but you won’t find any parabens or sodium lauryl sulfate!
As a fiber mascara, you will achieve a lot of length thanks to the combination of the gel base layer and the mascara itself that you apply separately. You can apply an extra coat if you want to thicken and lengthen them even further, but using it does require some practice to achieve positive results.
While it is a water-resistant and smudge-resistant product, it can be a bit messy to apply. If you’re new to makeup or using mascara, we recommend you skip this product for now and start with something simpler. Try this once you get the hang of things!
Naturally Rooted is the final mascara that we would like to discuss. It is free of dyes, parabens, and even gluten, so if any of those ingredients bother you, it is worth trying.
The ingredients are similar to the Endlessly Beautiful mascara, so you have the chamomile (stimulates growth as green tea does), and the sunflower oil which nourishes the lashes. We thought that it was a bit on the dry side right out of the bottle, which made it look clumpier upon application. It does, however, do an excellent job of lengthening.
If you tried Endlessly Beautiful and had a bad reaction, then this one might not work for you seeing that the formulas share some of the same ingredients.
The good news is that there are plenty of options available, so if these five products didn’t work for you, try one of the others.
