Makeup manufacturers sure don’t make shopping easy by shoving millions of products in our face. Also, what works good on one face may not work well on another!
When it comes to choosing eye shadow colors, you face the dilemma of choosing the colors that work best with your skin tone, eye color and hair color. Ahhh!
On our list below, we’ll be highlighting the best matte eyeshadow palette choices in order to simplify your search.
Which colors should you choose based on eye color? How can I deal with powder fallout?
These are the questions we’ll be answering for you below!
Some may feel that certain shadow colors aren’t acceptable for certain eye colors. Our thoughts?
It depends on the look you’re going for, your hair color and the other colors you’re wearing, but we also realize that there are some colors that accentuate better than others.
Here are our color tips:
- Blue Eyes. Champagnes, corals and rusty colors. Hints of purple will also compliment them.
- Grey Eyes. Smoky colors, along with the right shade of blue, will enhance those of you with grey eyes.
- Hazel Eyes. Smoky palettes are a great choice for those with hazel eyes, as are certain pinks and warm, neutral tones with a bit of shimmer.
- Green Eyes. Mustard and peach colors are great, along with browns and hints of purple.
- Brown Eyes.Burgundy, warm browns, salmon and golds are all excellent choices to have on your shadow palette.

Do I Need a Multiple Color Palette?
Some of you searching for the best matte eyeshadow palette may wonder if you should get one with a variety of colors or stick with a natural palette.
Unless you’re a makeup artist who frequently does the makeup of others or on yourself, you probably don’t need all of those colors. Often times, the majority of them end up going to waste because only 10-15 colors are actually used on a regular basis.
If you’re really interested in playing around with new eye techniques, colors and patterns, then we say go for it! You’ll love having a wide selection to choose from.
The rest of you should stick with a neutral palette and purchase individual colors (or smaller palettes) if you’re interested in trying out a new look.

Have Some Shimmery Options!
Matte shadows are versatile and great at helping you create a beautiful base, but for an extra pop, be sure that you have some shimmery shadows on hand for those occasions when you want your eyes to sparkle.
We prefer individual shimmer shadows to shimmer palettes because we’ve found that they only get used occasionally.
Get yourself a quality matte shadow palette and from there, you can throw in a few fun shimmer colors when you want to switch up your look.
Dealing with Fallout
Even with high quality eyeshadows, you may have to handle a little fallout – the loose powder that falls down to your face as you apply the shadow to your eyelids.
Here are a few ways you can deal with it:
- Colorless Powder. If you haven’t tried it, you might enjoy using a colorless powder in order to catch and then get rid of loose shadow that falls onto your face.
Just apply it under your eye and on the top of your cheekbone and leave it until you’re done applying the shadow.
Just sweep it away with a brush once you’re done and, voila! No residue.
- Erasers and Swabs. Some makeup manufacturers have handy little tools that help you pick up the loose powder from your face.
These allow you to dab it away rather than sweeping it away.
- Shield. They also make neat little mascara shields that catch all loose powder as it falls, but most of us doing our own make up probably won’t use one.
These are handier to those applying makeup to others.
5 Best Matte Eyeshadow Palette Reviews
The LORAC pro matte palette has an excellent range of neutral colors and they work well on a wide range of skin tones.
There are plenty of possibilities, whether you’re going for a fresh, light look or if you want a deeper, darker effect: this will do both.
In terms of actual product quality, you’ll find that these are smooth, easy to blend and have excellent pigmentation, but (oops!) there will be a bit of fallout as you apply. Hey, it happens! Use one of the suggestions we offered above to prevent it from ruining your foundation and concealer.
We do like how the powders layer so you can achieve any level of intensity (light to dark), so overall, it’s still our favorite one on the list.
If you’re looking for a broader range of colors, then It Cosmetics’ matte palette is awesome.
There are so many looks you can achieve thanks to the color varieties, and while it is labeled as “matte,” it seems to have just a hint of a satin finish in there to help brighten your eyes. They don’t make your eyes look dry and too flat, but rather help give your eyes a very subtle sparkle.
Product quality: easy to blend, smooth and easy to layer so that you can create a seamless fade from one color to another.
On the palette, you also get a pearl powder which you can use on top of the other colors to brighten them (great on the inside corner of the eye).
As we mentioned, this type of palette is ideal for those of you enjoy trying out new looks or if you’re a makeup artist need something with a wide range of colors.
We like the pigmentation and how they blend, but the size of each shadow is small (about the size of a nickel). You’ll run out of your favorite colors quickly, which means that you’ll probably need to purchase another palette with those colors so this one doesn’t got to waste.
Surprisingly good product for the price!
We love the fact that Tarte’s products are cruelty free and that they don’t contain parabens, mineral oils, phthalates or gluten! If you’re looking for a natural makeup choice, then this is a great brand.
The Tarte Tartlette palette seems to work well on lighter skin and it’s hard to see a noticeable difference between some colors once you’ve applied them. We like this for both day looks and evening looks.
In terms of quality, we definitely feel that it earns a spot on our top 5, we just wish they would have had a different range of colors on the palette.
Hey, maybe future editions will change!
Urban Decay makes some awesome products and we definitely love their Naked Basics palette.
The color choices make it easy for you to wear them alone or build if you’re going for a darker look, and they all blend well. Great color that lasts once you put it on your lids!
One downside: the price. We know not all of you out there want to spend this much on shadows, but it is a quality product.
We have plenty of other options on our list if you want to spend less, so be sure to check them out!
