When most of us apply eyeshadow, we expect it to show up on the skin. Some products, however, just don’t contain enough pigment to allow us to do that in one swipe.
Rather than wasting time and money by purchasing numerous palettes yourself to see which ones have the pigment you’re looking for, you can read our guide. We have don’t all of the testing for you.
Here, we will share our list of the best pigmented eyeshadow palettes and provide you with a few useful tips that will help you choose the right one for your desired look.

High Pigment vs. Low Pigment
The greatest benefit of having a highly pigmented shadow is that you don’t need to use as much product as you do with one that doesn’t contain a lot of pigment.
With a simple swipe of your finger or an eyeshadow brush and you will have a heap of color that will show up brightly on your lids as soon as you apply.
Does that mean that low-pigmented shadows are useless?
If you want to have some colors for blending and fading, then those with less pigment make it easier for you to do this. You can always build up the color intensity with multiple applications, but since this does require you to use more product, it’s not always the best option.
Which Palette Should You Choose?
When it comes to choosing eyeshadows, we recommend that you give yourself plenty of options.
Do you want a palette with matte colors only like Morphe’s Pro 35 Eyeshadow Palette or a shimmer-filled palette like that from L’Oréal Paris? The rest are a mixture of the two, but here are a few tips to help you choose the right one.
- Matte Only/Shimmer Only. Getting a palette that offers you only matte colors or only shimmer colors is great if you have a go-to look that requires one of them. Chances are you will appreciate the wider range of colors in a single finish rather than having half and half in a mixed palette.
Matte shadow palettes are a great choice for those with aging skin and work great in fall and spring when you want to add a pop of bright color.
Shimmer palettes work well for winter and summer looks when you want to highlight certain parts of the eye. Since they reflect light, they are perfect for evening and night use since they will help make your eyes stand out in an otherwise dark room.
- Mix. Many find a mixture of both matte and shimmer shadows to be the most useful since you can achieve a variety of looks.
You might have fewer color options in this case, but if you find a palette you like, the chances are that you will end up using it on a regular basis.
3 Best Pigmented Eyeshadow Reviews
Based on all of the products we tried, Lorac, Karity Cosmetics, and Coastal Scents have the best pigmented eyeshadow palettes.
# of Colors: 16
The majority of users who are looking for a quality everyday palette with excellent pigmentation find Lorac to be the top palette.
They give you a mixture of both shimmer and matte shadows and the colors they included are quite well-rounded. They work well as brow shades, eye liners, and you can use them both wet and dry! Their lighter highlighting shades are also great for both eyes and cheeks.
Another thing we love about this palette is that they throw in a mini tube of their awesome Behind the Scenes Eye Primer; a product that works extremely well if you have oily lids.
If you have always settled for the smaller drugstore palettes with just a few colors, it’s time to step up your game and your choice by opting for one like this.
# of Colors: 40
Unlike the previous palette, this one offers you a range of shimmer and metallic shadows to help highlight and enhance eyes through bold colors. You can also apply this wet or dry and it has incredible staying power, so your look won’t wear off after just a few hours. Use this palette for professional practice or just for fun when you’d like to mix up your look a bit when you get ready to go out.
If you would like an even winder color selection, consider getting their Reversal Planet palette along with this one, featuring more earthy tones with a few pops of color.
# of Colors: 252
Professional makeup artists or die hard makeup fans need to have options, and with the wide range of colors offered in this palette, you will have more than enough options to create the look you want.
As with the other two products, you can use this both wet and dry, and the pigment is terrific. The size of the shadow cups is a bit on the small side, however, so you might run out of your most frequently used colors quickly.
For everyday looks or those who prefer to enhance the eyes naturally, this isn’t the right palette choice since you would probably only use a few of the colors. The rest of them would sadly go to waste.
However, if you are just getting into makeup artistry or if you simply want a wide selection of colors that you can use for costuming, then this palette is a bargain. Go for it!
